Sony Enlists Major Consumer Electronics Firms in TransferJet Development
July 18, 2008
Sony has enlisted 14 major consumer electronics firms in the development of an ultrawideband wireless data system codenamed TransferJet, EE Times reported. Operating in the 4.5GHz frequency, TransferJet is capable of transmitting data at a speed of up to 375Mbps over a distance of about three centimeters. The TransferJet technology is deemed a viable alternative to cable-based USB2.0 and Firewire which connect and transmit data between different consumer electronic devices.

Companies enlisted by Sony include Canon, Kodak, Hitachi, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Samsung, Toshiba, JVC, KDDI, Kenwood, Pioneer, Seiko Epson, and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications. Sony expects the first batch of TransferJet-enabled products to hit the market in 2009.
